Our Story

Founded in 1891, Central Baptist Church has served Denver for more than 135 years. As the second-oldest African American church, Central Baptist has grown to be a foundation of worship, fellowship, and service in the community. Organized under the leadership of Rev. Dr. W.P.T. Jones, the church was built through the faith, sacrifice, and determination of 30 members from Zion Baptist Church. The congregation originally worshiped in a rented location at 23rd and Lawrence known as the “Old Campbell A.M.E. Church” before establishing its permanent home at 24th and California Street.

Central’s early history reflects the perseverance of its congregation. After purchasing property at 24th and California, members worked together to make their vision of a permanent sanctuary a reality. Construction began in 1912 but was interrupted by World War I. In the 1920s, the congregation renewed its efforts, with members donating bricks, labor, and financial resources. Women of the church even took in washing to help purchase bricks, demonstrating the extraordinary commitment that helped build Central and establish its lasting presence in Denver.

Over the decades, Central grew in membership, ministry, and influence. Generations of pastors and members expanded its worship, music, youth, missionary, educational, and community programs. Under Rev. Dr. William Oscar Mays Sr. (1956–1989), the church became widely known for strong biblical preaching, exceptional choirs, community leadership, and involvement in the National Baptist Convention. Central also became a place where generations of ministers, deacons, and community leaders were nurtured and equipped for service.

Beginning in 1990, Rev. Willie D. Simmons led another significant period of growth. Membership grew to more than 500, church facilities were renovated, and additional property along California Street was acquired. These efforts ultimately made possible the construction of a new sanctuary, offices, and educational spaces. Groundbreaking for the expansion took place in 2005, and the congregation joyfully entered its new sanctuary in September 2006.

Through more than a century of change, Central Baptist Church has remained committed to its founding spirit of faith, perseverance, and service. From generations of ministry and community involvement to historic milestones such as its first all-woman ordination worship ceremony in 2013, Central continues to build upon the legacy of those who came before. Today, the church remains committed to developing disciples, serving the community, welcoming others into Christian fellowship, and being a beacon of light and hope at 24th and California Street.
